Throughout the year students will have several opportunities to work on the six traits of writing. The six traits are Ideas and Content, Sentence Fluency, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, and Conventions. Every morning at Calendar time students will have the opportunity to edit the morning message using one of the Six Traits of Writing. The first couple of weeks the six trait that we will focus on will be Word Choice. The morning message will use poor vocabulary words and the students will have to choose higher vocabulary words to use instead. After I feel the students understand Word Choice we would move on to a new six trait, one example might be sentence fluency. Not only would students work or practice these skills during the morning message but they would have time to work on these skills in their journal writing. As I check students journals I would be looking for which ever six trait of writing we were working on. If it was sentence fluency I would check to make sure that each sentence started differently or that the sentences went together alright.
